It’s summer! That means barbecues, beaches, and vacations for most of us. But that also me American holidays such as Memorial Day, Fouth of July, and Labor Day that bring on red, white, and blue patriotic clothing. Now, it looks cute but I know you don’t want to look like one of those ladies that are decked out head to toe in American flags. You want to wear an American flag not look like a flag that should be hung up on a pole.

Now the best way to do this and to do anything is to keep it simple. Simple patterns, simple accessories, and simple colors. Have the Americana print as your accent piece and work with other things around it. I find light was denim piece is great with an Americana print. Dark can be done, but is hot during the summer months and look too heavy if not done right. Wear your distress denim is the best when it comes to red, white, and blue clothing. It just looks amazing together and you can make any jean or shorts look distressed if you don’t want to spend much for a new pair.

Do a little peek-a-boo with a print. Here I kept everything else basic solid color and hid some leggings underneath my skirt. You can use any skirt you want, it doesn’t have to be black. You can have a red, white, or use a light to a dark blue skirt. This can even do be done with a dress. Even under a maxi skirt or dress. Just tie a knot at the bottom of your long skirt or even have one side show. If you want to go bolder, try even pairing it with a graphic tee that matches.

Now, if you really want to be bold and want to go full pattern mixing. Try sticking to basic rules of pattern mixing.

  1. Make one pattern the dominate the outfit.
  2. Keep the colors in the same color family and make sure one color is matching in each pattern.
  3. Make sure the patterns are a different scale.
  4. And you can also use accessories to break-up the patterns

Here I made sure my leggings were completed different from my shirt. Still keeping in the same color family. I even made sure the off white matched too. I kept one pattern simple while one crazy and bold. The one advice I have with pattern mixing: “the more you do it, the better you get.” I do it all the time, I will pull ever item I have in my wardrobe that I think matches. I pick a piece I want to dominate and place that on my bed. Then, one at a time, I proceed to overlap each item with the dominant piece. Once I cannot find anything else that matches, I go to my basic clothing.  It saves me time, instead of trying everything on.  I also do research, look at what everyone else is wearing and googling ideas. Taking those ideas and tweaking and playing with them a little until it fits me. There is nothing wrong with copying something we all do it, as long as you make it your own.

Love you all.
